What is Big Brothers Big Sisters? Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Southern Tier is a site-based mentoring program that meets once weekly at a designated site location. During this hour of program, “Bigs” and “Littles” participate in various fun activities that focus on, but are not limited to, team building, community service, character education, creativity and much more. All activities are supervised by the Big Brothers Big Sisters Site Coordinator. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Southern Tier serves youth in Corning, Elmira, and Whitesville.
Safe & Effective Matches The safety and well being of the youth we serve is Big Brothers Big Sisters highest priority. Therefore, our “Bigs” undergo a thorough screening process in order to gain an increased understanding of their needs and expectations as a volunteer in our program. All “Bigs” attend a training about how to be a mentor and are introduced to the necessary skills to succeed. Our matches are effective because professional staff ensure that the relationships are safe and rewarding for everyone.
How to Enroll Your Child · You (a parent or legal guardian) can contact our office at 607-936-3507. · After your child has been accepted into the program, our Site Coordinator will meet with you and your child to learn more about your child and to try to find the best possible mentor for your child. · Once you have accepted a potential “Big,” you and your child will come to your designated site location to meet the mentor. You will have the opportunity to talk to the “Big” one-on-one to help you feel completely at ease about the match. · On a weekly basis, the match will meet at the designated site location for one hour of supervised fun activities. · The Site Coordinator will continue to monitor the match throughout the life of the match.
Volunteering is Fun Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable things you will ever do. You will be asked to provide three references, participate in an in-person interview and have a background check performed.
